Regardless, here we are with our smart phones attached to many things via Bluetooth: speakers, keyboards, cars, and now even smart home appliances. A tool company is even linking to smart phones for security and data tracking. What’s next? We asked our writers what other devices they would like tethered to their smart phones.
Our Opinion
For the most part it seems our writers try to limit what they tether to their phones. Trevor doesn’t want his car or home items partnered up with his phone. He thinks the tool tethering is “not really more than a trinket for the average Joe” like himself. He would like better compatibility between his Android and PC but can’t see his car and phone needing to know each about each other. “I’d rather have them be cousins than close family.” Derrik doesn’t have any desire to tether anything to his phone. He’s heard arguments for doing so, such as getting a smartwatch to “reduce the need to take out your phone,” but to him it just seems lazy. He also sees no use in tethering his car as he’d just rather make calls after he finishes driving. Phil also doesn’t see a point in tethering other devices and jokes “I have enough bad dreams about them whispering behind my back as it is.” Mahesh doesn’t have anything tethered to his smart phone other than a small remote that lets him control the volume and take pictures on his phone. But he believes he’d like to have a smart home system in the future.
Charnita has a 2015 Ford with her phone connected to it which she says really comes in handy. She would also like to have a smart home system and specifically a Nest because she finds it to be a pain to be in bed upstairs and have to go all the way downstairs to change the thermostat. I’m in line with Mahesh and Charnita. I have a Ford as well, but mine is a few years older, so it doesn’t have as many capabilities as I’d like. However, I like being able to make and answer calls through the steering column and also enjoy listening to my music through the car’s stereo. I’d enjoy a smart home as well, but what I would really like to see would be a greater ability to record TV programs on your television and watch them on your computer or mobile device. On Demand comes close to this, but it’s not available until the day after a program airs.
